Location Will Be This Year’s Twitter At SXSW
MG Siegler
Feb 25, 2010

We’re two weeks away from the SXSW Interactive, a drinking festival with a side of tech that takes place each year in Austin, Texas (before the larger SXSW film and music portions). While the conference itself is interesting, more interesting is usually the “next big thing” that comes out of it. And I think I already know what it will be this year.

Three years ago, Twitter famously was the talk of the conference (it won the web award that year). While sure, it didn’t explode into mainstream popularity until sometime later, the writing was on the wall for the early-adopters who started using it there or shortly thereafter. Two years ago, it was arguably Twitter again that was the must-use service throughout the conference as it continued to mature. But last year saw some new entries rise. Both Foursquare and Gowalla launched at the conference, with Foursquare gaining much of the momentum coming out of the conference (as some of us predicted). And this year, I suspect it will be largely an extension of that, with location services in general being the talk of the show.

Based on what I’ve been hearing, basically at the major players in the location-based space have big things planned for this year’s SXSW. Foursquare hopes to have a new, completely overhauled version of its iPhone app ready for the event this year. They are also likely to have a huge batch of new badges for people to collect throughout the week. Meanwhile, Gowalla has a large event of its own, complete with special VIP access if you use the service throughout the conference. The SXSW conference is also highlighting the Austin-based Gowalla as a key tool on its own pages.

A newer startup, Plancast (started by TechCrunch alum Mark Hendrickson — think “Foursquare For The Future“), has already put together a helpful unofficial SXSW guide surrounding events during the conference (and actually events for those who aren’t attending too). They also hope to have their iPhone app ready in time for the conference.

Meanwhile, both Twitter’s and SimpleGeo’s plans are still largely unknown at this point, but both are planning big things, we hear. Twitter could use the event to launch its ad platform, and CEO Evan Williams is giving the keynote on Monday.

And then, of course, there is Facebook. While they’re sniffing around Loopt right now, could they use the conference to talk a bit more about their location plans? If all these other services start getting a ton of buzz during the conference, they might have to.

Of course, all of this is assuming that AT&T supplies any service whatsoever this year. Last year, the network was completely overloaded until the final two days after the telecom giant scrambled to up their bandwidth (and even then it was only marginally better). They promised that failure would never happen again (people in San Francisco in New York City may have something to say about that), so we’ll see this year. If AT&T fails again, it could really hurt a lot of these location-based services, many of which are heavily predicated around the iPhone.

Otherwise, this is going to be location’s year at SXSW.

Wow, way to go out on a limb there with such a bold prediction.

  • Kyle

Pretty easy to claim your predicted the hype when you are the one creating all the hype, eh, MG?

I predict this comment will make fun of location. Hell, if something as vapid as Twitter can suceed, I wouldn’t be surprised if Foursquare and its ilk are the next big thing. I’ll be disappointed, but not surprised.

Rats, we’re not likely our location-based app until March 20. Maybe the film and music types will like.

  • http://www.mobileinc.co.uk Murat

I defo think it’s down to Twitter and Facebook to carry location for the masses. Imagine the sort of cool stuff developers will create with that amount of reach.

I don’t think Foursquare will be popular outside of the tech/twitter groups.

Wrote a post about it here:

    http://mobileinc.co.uk/2009/11/mobile-location-really-is-about-to-get-interesting/

    And Foursquare here:

I wonder how many entirely new location based services we will see introduced at sxsw. We are launching something pretty cool.

  • http://www.rockheim.no/ Magne Gisvold

just some nit-picking: as far as I know, “writing on the wall” is a metaphor for a forewarning of impending doom – not just any forewarning. biblical reference, i think.

apart from that: a good foresight on your hand! It feels spot on :)

  • Moe Glitz

Location Based Services was the major buzzword that all British Teleco’s used back in 2001 when they brought their hugely expensive 3G licences from the Government.

But because of the lack of a strong web service – WAP was the only way to recieve online data, Location Based Services failed to take off.

Location is not a new ‘killer App’ for the Web, its just that right now we are at least able to do more in this exciting sector due to the advances in both the Web and Mobile Industries.

  • http://www.mobileinc.co.uk Murat

I think Facebook and Twitter will carry mobile location. The reach that Facebook has means that some cool apps and services will pop up through developers

Again, Fourquare has <8000 fans on Facebook. Gowalla <3000. The reach of these applications is kind of pathetic, especially after being around for a year.

I work in tech, develop Facebook applications, and have dozens of friends that are incredibly connected and enthusiastic about tech products, mobile, etc. Nearly everyone I know has an iPhone. The rest have Blackberries or Droids. The number of people I know on Facebook that "check in"? 2. TWO. This crap doesn't catch on. It's not viral. It's not the new Twitter. No one cares. Give it up, Siegler.

  • http://mattwrench.com Matt Wrench

I think Gowalla’s going to win big this year. Austin’s their base of operations.

  • John toubje

So many companies are launching updates or refreshes to their products and they all are planning on launching them at the same time. In my case, I looked abroad to see what services where not being met and I came to the realization that Twitter integration with these services should be the highest priority. I am very curious to see what LBS are planning on doing?
I am so looking forward to this event.

  • Big John

I like Foursquare and Gowalla, but for some reason I’m using MyTown a lot more.

  • http://www.hectorramos.com Hector Ramos

Gowalla is setting everything in place for SXSW. Their new 1.5 client released yesterday shows which friends are currently at the spot you’ve checked into, and which were there previously. This is going to be my first SXSW so I hope Gowalla can help me meet my ‘net friends easier.

  • http://page.ly Sally Strebel

Plancast is awesome. I’m looking forward to their iphone app but in the meantime, I’ve uploaded all plans to ical than synced to my phone.

I’m not really big into FourSquare mainly because of security. But I know many die hards.

Can’t believe MyTown wasn’t mentioned. Their 1.1 million users are sure to be active at SXSW! Hope AT&T is getting ready for the date flood.

  • http://www.dubsxsw.com Angela Lauria

We actually worked with Mapquest to build the Maps feature on the my.SXSW iPhone app, which let’s you see by the hour which events are close to you and which of your friends are around as well. The Maps feature lets you easily hook up with friends, sneak in an extra show, or plot your custom SXSW schedule on a map, all from your iPhone.

If you haven’t downloaded the my.SXSW mobile app, you should check it out. You can find it here: http://my.sxsw.com/tools

BTW, this kind of map functionality will also be rolled into Version 3.0 of DUB.

  • http://www.dailygrommet.com Jules Pieri

Yikes. I already have a flip flopping stomach about SXSW. Why? I am presenting my company at SXSW and it is NOT a location driven app! And I’m not a 27 year old software engineer. Should I stay home? (Kidding…nothing could make me miss it.)

(We’re in the BizSpark finalists group presenting on Monday…)

I hope there are some open minds on “the next big thing.” (Imagine “Citizen Commerce”. Say it softly three times. :))

  • Chris Hopkinson

True. We worked with Mapquest to build the official SXSW iPhone app Map. The Maps feature lets you easily see where all the SX events are at any given time & what’s around you now based on your location. It also shows you where your friends are on the map.
We’re building more location based features into Dub 3.0 coming out right after SX. Cheers!

You live in the Bay Area, MG, where there’s a lot to do. Of course location-based stuff is interesting to you.

But you are in a very, very small minority. Most of the world lives in East Bumfuck, Dullsville County. What are they gonna do, check in at Burger King and find out that all of their friends go there too because it’s the only damn place to eat in a 40 mile radius?

Twitter, on the other hand, appeals to millions of people, because even people who live in the boring majority of the world might be interested in posting 140-character bursts about how they wish they had meaning in their lives.
