Yelp Enables Check-Ins On Its iPhone App; Foursquare, Gowalla Ousted As Mayors
MG Siegler
Jan 15, 2010

homeWhen you think of the idea of “checking-in” at a venue in a mobile app, you likely think of Foursquare or Gowalla right now. The two gained significant momentum, funding, and users in the location space in 2009. But even with the growth, both services are still relatively small, neither much bigger than 200,000 users. That’s why much larger social networks like Facebook are perceived to be a potential risk to them. And one of those bigger networks has just entered the fray: Yelp.

With the latest version of its iPhone app (version 4) which will be released today in the App Store, Yelp is introducing a bunch of new features. But none is bigger than the new ability to check-in to venues. Considering there are some 1.25 million users of the Yelp iPhone app, with this update, Yelp will already become the largest network offering this functionality by far. And it’s not just check-ins. Yelp is also adding rewards for users who frequent certain venues, and a leaderboard. Yes, they’re also getting into the gaming element of location.

So does this spell doom for Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, and the others? Maybe, but maybe not. No one is quite sure how well the concept of checking-in will work when tacked on to an existing social network. Yelp is a great one to try it though since it’s already based around venues. But the social connections on Yelp aren’t like more traditional social networks, so it will be interesting to see if with this feature, users start transferring their more traditional social graphs over to Yelp. From Yelp’s perspective, this is just another way to allow people to contribute to the service without having to write reviews or upload pictures, Yelp mobile product manager Eric Singley tells us. It also adds a new layer of credibility to those who do write reviews because other users can now potentially see that these users have been to the place they are reviewing numerous times.

And yes, the idea is to eventually allow Yelp users that check-in places to see certain deals offered up by the venues. Yelp already has this concept in place with their Sales and Special Offers program that’s about a year old. Already there are over 200,000 of these offers that businesses are serving up, I’m told. Yelp could easily turn this on for the new check-in feature as well, which Singley envisions happening. Perhaps most significantly, Singley doesn’t foresee Yelp using such a feature to augment their business model. While he wouldn’t entirely rule it out in the future, he noted that Yelp had no plans to change the idea of letting venues offer deals for free. This could potentially threaten the Foursquare and Gowalla business models. Right now, neither have paid arrangements with venues for the deals they offer, but eventually they were hoping to turn that on. If Yelp offers venues the ability to give customers coupons for free, it could get interesting.

biz_after_checkinJust as with Foursquare and Gowalla, Yelp users will be able to get Push Notifications when friends check-in somewhere. There will also be a check-in stream to show you where all your friends are. And as I alluded to, users who go to certain venues a lot will be rewarded with badges. At first, this is limited to a “Regular” badge, which you will get if you check-in somewhere twice in a 60 day span (though Singley notes this algorithm could be tweaked as needed). And this badge will appear next to your reviews on Yelp to let others know that you go there a lot. Singley also left open the possibility of other badges eventually. And while this is iPhone-only for now, the check-in data should be coming to the website in a couple of weeks, and then to the other mobile apps as well, I’m told.

But how the check-in battle will play out remains to be seen. First, we’ll have to see if the concept catches on with Yelp users. And that shouldn’t distract current the users from the wide range of other new features in the latest version of the iPhone app. In fact, “this is the biggest iPhone update we’ve ever done,” Singley says. So what else is new besides check-ins?

Yelp has finally added profiles to the app. You can now see and edit your Yelp profile just as you would on the website. This is an extension of the signing-in ability Yelp added in its last update. Also new is the ability to more easily find friends you may know. The Yelp app can use your iPhone’s address book, or your Facebook contacts if you’re hooked up with Facebook Connect.

Speaking of Facebook, you’ll now be able to share things more easily on that network, as well as on Twitter. This includes Quick Tips and the new check-ins. This could potentially help the Yelp app grow even bigger.

Finally, Yelp has updated the Monocle functionality. As you may recall, this is the augmented reality view of Yelp, and now it allows you to lay your phone horizontally to bring up a map overlay that will work with the iPhone’s compass. And with the new check-ins, you’ll also have an option to view where your friends are in this augmented reality view.

Overall, the look of the Yelp app has been updated too. And you can see in the screen shot at the top of this post, the main page now looks more like the Facebook app. It seems that a lot of apps are borrowing this design these days; LinkedIn did recently as well.

Just as it has always done, Yelp plans to test all of these new features on the iPhone first, then roll them out to the other mobile platforms. Of those, not surprisingly, Singley seems most excited about the Android platform.

With Yelp now in the check-in location game, maybe Google will be kicking itself for not scooping them up when they had the chance. After all, I have a feeling we’re going to see a lot of movement in terms of acquisitions in that field this year.

When the new Yelp app goes live (which should be shortly), you can find it here.

Not sure this a “game over” move, as MG mentioned, the social graphs on Yelp don’t really match up with your real friends in most cases, so I’d be less interested in where my yelp friends check-in (I’ve never met or plan to meet any of my yelp friends for example).

They’ll have to re-tool something to make it easier to find my real friends and limit updates to those users.

Why didn’t Yelp do a deal with Foursquare? That would have been a win all around. I really expected Foursquare to be the Twitter (plumbing) of location-based services. Now everyone is going to have their own dumb check-in system. Choice is good, market picks the winners, etc but still, sucks for us consumers.

The threat this poses to other LBS like foursquare does not seem imminent to me. If yelp were a foursquare user, it would be at the top of the douchebag leaderboard.

In other words, if the annoying behaviors from yelp (long winded reviews, quantity over quality) carry over into checkin and tips on yelp, it would not have the same value to me as foursquare does now (albeit with a smaller user base).

“It also adds a new layer of credibility to those who do write reviews because other users can now potentially see that these users have been to the place they are reviewing numerous times.”

This is a very great point and demonstrates the value that location based check-ins can contribute to an existing platform. Credibility has always been a problem with user submitted reviews.

It will now be harder to post a bunch of fake reviews on Yelp because people will be able to see how often you’ve been to that location. A glowing review from a person that never posts other reviews and has never checked into that location looks more suspect.

Kudos to Yelp for using location based check ins to augment the value of their existing service. Perhaps Blippy will be able to do the same thing for Amazon.

I wouldn’t say that this means the end of Foursquare and Gowalla – they’re obviously very bright people backed by very bright investors. But this does mean that they are going to have to iterate their products so they contribute more value than ‘x person checked into this location’, because everyone is going to have that feature soon enough. (And it’s easy enough to build internally, as Yelp has done.)

  • http://billda.com Bill DAlessandro

Well this gives me a hypothesis on why the Yelp/Google deal fell apart. Obviously, this functionality has been in the works for a while. I expect that Yelp informed Google that they were about to roll out this “checkin” functionality, and that they expected the massive potential to be reflected in the sale price.

I imagine that Google probably felt a bit differently, or wasn’t willing to give Yelp as much credit for the upside potential of checkins as Yelp was asking for…

why would yelp want to share the pie, they are by far the largest location based service. For some reason they were never lumped in when talking about location based services like gowalla, and foursquare. But I would put a lot of money , when you’re in an area looking for something like a restaurant or store, you’re using yelp and not foursquare or gowalla.

Mea culpa, looks like Yelp does have an Android app. Well hopefully they’ll add check-ins to that as well. I dumped BrightKite for FourSquare so I could see dumping 4sq for this; I don’t want to check-in on multiple apps for sure.

“I wouldn’t say that this means the end of Foursquare and Gowalla – they’re obviously very bright people backed by very bright investors.”

The brightness of the people and investors is not at all as obvious as you think. People fool themselves into not believing the obvious. And it was obvious from the beginning that Foursquare & company was just a feature, not a business. It’s funny, starting several months back Jason Calacanis mentioned on two or three episodes of This Week In Startups that Foursquare was just a feature and it made no sense to think of it as a business. He actually said months ago that this is something others like Yelp (he actually mentioned Yelp) could easily add and make them unnecessary. A few months later he was saying he was upset that he wasn’t allowed to invest in Foursquare. And a month after that he was excited about his new $25K investment in Gowalla. You see otherwise smart people convince themselves to overlook their own obvious conclusions when the buzz and hype gets them nervous and greedy that they’re going to miss the new hot thing.

Just so long as you all realize that all of this information you give to any company, yes all of it, and yes, personally identifiable info, is being compiled into large databases by companies to sell you to advertisers.

I could go to one of these database companies and pull a profile on you, by name, that would include a shocking amount of info about you and your Web activities, your friends, job etc etc.

I’m not kidding. You’ve been sold out. The uses for this data may be somewhat benign, if not a little creepy, today, but the utter abuse is just around the corner.

Yet another lame fad…checking in. Honestly, get out of the Bay Area and nobody cares. It’s surprising to me how many of these location-based apps don’t have IP to protect themselves from getting driven into the ground by the likes of a Google or Yelp. Part of the reason is that there is not much substance to these solutions. What’s even more astonishing are the investors for jumping into this herd like mentality. They deserve to fail more than the entrepreneurs.

  • Justyn

And considering Google already paid for an LBS product (Dodge Ball) that they couldn’t figure out what to do with, they may have shied away from paying a premium for Yelp, for a feature they already screwed up.

This is very interesting. From a business perspective I think it is going to be hard for businesses to want to list and manage on multiple check-in platforms. Once they sign up for one it should be pretty sticky. However, one could also look at all of these apps as nodes in a single platform to reach customers and one larger entity or aggregator could serve out the specials and badges across any of these platforms using the APIs.

There has got to be a long-term reason to be “there” – checking in on an app and potentially annoying your date while you whip out your phone again, and for businesses to take the time to post. Right now using Yelp and Gowalla and both are great – easy and interesting. Yelp obviously has more utility, but Gowalla is moving rapidly and doing some interesting things.

Investors have often said that they are investing in the team, not necessarily the specific idea. Many companies have found success after switching gears away from their original idea. Location based apps are definitely in their infancy and I think they will ultimately be very useful to end users, but it might take a few iterations (and different product innovations) before we get there.

For now, we definitely have to get past the ‘me too’ phase, where there are 10 different apps available that basically let you do the same thing (check in to a location). Users aren’t going to want to check into more than one app anyway.

Waze and CitySourced are my two current favorite examples of apps that are using the location abilities of modern phones to do something useful, but where location itself isn’t the core feature of the application. We need to more further in that direction.
